POP ART Self-Portraits

Grade 4’s rocked with their Pop Art Self-Portraits.

I introduced the students to Lichtenstein’s art and the use of Ben-Day dots to give a comic strip type of drawing.

This  project demands a bit of preparation, as you need to take a picture of each student and print (b&w) into an A4 paper.

Students need to cover the back of their pictures (A4 paper) with lead, just use a pencil to go all over the back of it.  Then turn around and trace the outline of the face into a piece of cardboard, this simple step will make all the difference with this project.

You will now have a piece of cardboard with an outlined sketch of each student’s face. Proceed to outline with a black marker.

At this stage students can add a dialogue box. Without too many guidelines, their personalities will emerge in there.

Color most areas using Ben-Day dots.  Choose some smaller areas to fill completely. We used markers and rulers to make the lines and dots neat and straight. This step demanded patience. I handed tissue and reminded the students to constantly wipe the ruler clean, or you will end with some undesired ink stains.

Once finished, decorate the background with any medium you prefer. Could be tempera disks (careful if the markers are not permanent) or oil pastels. I have tried different approaches every time we do this and they always turn out super cool. The one pictured below was done with tempera disks and then colored pencils once it was dry.

Voila! Enjoy.
